Devoted to God and his family
OAKVILLE - Mr. Americo Correia, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 9, 2019 at his home. He was the husband of the late Anna Evelyn Correia for 69 years.
Americo was born May 4, 1928 in Sao Bras Del Alportel, Portugal to the late Joao de Sousa and Maria de Concepcion Tome Correia. His family then relocated to Waterbury. In 1945, Americo joined the United States Navy, where he proudly served aboard the USS Monterey. After he was discharged, he delivered oil for Waterbury Petroleum Products for many years before working in multiple local factories. He eventually retired from Waterbury Swiss Automatics.
Americo was a man of deep faith, devoted to God. He was a communicant at Saint Mary Magdalen Parish and made many religious retreats. Family was most important to Americo. He enjoyed vacations with his daughter and her family, sightseeing, visiting amusement parks and spending time at the beach.
In addition to his loving wife and his parents, Americo is predeceased by his brother, Roy Correia. He is survived by his three children, Dianne Diorio and her husband James of Watertown, Michael Correia and his wife Phyllis of Oakville, and John Correia and his wife Mary of Oakville; his three brothers, John Correia and his wife Lucille of Waterbury, Leonard Correia and his wife Cindy of Oakville, Joseph Correia and his wife Carol of Naugatuck; his sisters, Lydia Keith, Wilhelmina Plourde and her husband Joseph, Irene DiFronzo and her husband Robert, and Virginia Scozzafava and her husband John, all of Waterbury. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, as well as, many nieces and nephews.
The Correia family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Vitas, especially Maria, for their guidance, care and support during Americo's brief illness. A special thank you to Dianne Diorio for taking on the role of caretaker, devoting herself to making his final days comfortable.
Funeral services for Mr. Correia will be held on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, 16 Buckingham St. Oakville, CT 06779 to celebrate Mass of Christian burial. Those who are planning to attend are kindly asked to meet directly at church. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Correia's family asked for donations to be made to St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, Inc., 34 Willow Street, P. O. Box 1612, Waterbury, Connecticut 06721.
