WINSTED - Andrew Kavula age 88 of Winsted, formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2015 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.
Andrew was born June 3, 1927 in Waterbury, the son of the late Peter and Anna (Sabotovitch) Kavula. He graduated from Webster Grammar School and Leavenworth High School in Waterbury. Soon after high school graduation, Andrew entered the US Army where he proudly served his country during World War II with the Occupation Forces in Germany. He was in the Quartermaster Corps and trained in Short Wave radio. He was honorably discharged from the US Army as a Technical Corporal. Under the GI bill, he was trained at RCI in electronics in New York City. Rather than follow the electronics field, Andrew followed his sister into the Beauty Culture Field and initiated the purchase of a hairdressing school in Waterbury, renaming it "The M. Kavula Institute of Hair Design". Later he oversaw the purchase of a school in Meriden to be known as the Meriden Hair Design Academy and created the school in Torrington known as the Torrington Beauty Academy. Andrew was also a licensed realtor and was a member of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Waterbury.
Andrew leaves a niece, Mary Ann Lariviere (Robert) and nephew Michael Kavula Jr. (Clara) and great nieces Christina Allyn, Cynthia Lariviere and Laurena Schlasinger and great nephews, Douglas Lariviere and Michael Kavula III. He also leaves 5 great great nieces, Natalie Allyn, Paige and Brooke Schlasinger, Eva and Anna Lariviere and great great nephews, Christian and Joshua Allyn and Tyler Lariviere.
Funeral Services for Mr. Kavula will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 10:00 am at EASTSIDE MEMORIAL "A Casey Family Funeral Home and Tribute Center," 1987 East Main St., Waterbury. Burial will follow in St Marys Orthodox Cemetery, Waterbury. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Andrew's memory may be made to Holy Virgin Mary Orthodox Church 3125 North Main St Waterbury CT 06704, the Edward E. Sullivan St. Center, 88 East Albert St Torrington CT 06790 or to the Winsted Senior Center, 80 Holsbird Ave. Winsted CT 06098.
