WATERTOWN - Anthony "Tony" DiNunzio, age 95 of Watertown, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Waterbury Hospital after an extended illness. He was the widower of Nellie (Krayeski) DiNunzio.
One of 10 children, Tony was born June 19, 1922 in Oakville, Connecticut to Bernardino DiNunzio and Theodora (Daddona) DiNunzio. Tony spent his entire life living, working and attending school in Watertown and Oakville. Anthony proudly served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army Medical Corps stationed in the South Pacific. Upon returning home from the Army, Tony was a contractor. He started his own construction company- D&D Construction Company and built many homes in the Watertown/Oakville area. During this time, in the early 1950s, he also served as Tax Assessor for the Town of Watertown. In 1958, Tony built and operated Turnpike Lanes in Watertown, retiring in 1972. Before and after his retirement, he was very active in several area organizations. He was a member of Federal Lodge #17 Free and Accepted Masons of Watertown (Past Master), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7330, Oakville (Past Commander), American Legion Post 195 Oakville, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, Shriners International and the Watertown Rotary Club. In addition, Tony was a member of several Fish and Game Clubs. He also served on the Town of Watertown, Public Building Committee which oversaw the construction of several new government buildings in town. Tony was an avid fisherman, both fresh and salt water. He was well known for his annual fishing trips to Canada, for several decades. He was also an avid bird hunter.
Anthony is survived by his daughter, Frances D. Murphy of Bolton, CT, his son, William DiNunzio of Bennington, VT, granddaughter, Frances Schnetzer and her husband, Jonathan of Coventry, CT, grandson, Timothy Murphy and his wife, Kayla and their daughter, Charlie and their son ,Connor of Austin, TX. He is also survived by sisters Lena Pietrantuono of Watertown, CT, Jayne Clemente of Oakville, CT, Ann Gonder of FL, and Betty DiNunzio of CO, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Ralph DiNunzio, sisters, Mary Ruccio, Phyllis DiNunzio, Rose Pedro and Laurie DiMichele.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the O'Neill Funeral Home,742 Main Street, Oakville, CT. Relatives and friends may visit with Tony's family from 9 to 11 AM Tuesday morning. Burial immediately following at the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown, CT.
