SOUTHBURY - Antone "Tony" Rakich, age 84 of Southbury CT, died unexpectedly at home on February 19, 2014. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Colleen Rakich.
Tony was born April 24, 1929 in Waterbury, the son of the late Antone and Mary (Karzek) Rakich. A graduate of Waterbury schools and the University of Connecticut, he became a metallurgist with Chase Brass and Copper, Anaconda American Brass and T & R Metals. At the time of his passing he was a consultant for Copper Development Associates. From his home office he answered calls from around the world from people as wide ranging as Engineers, organ builders and the staff of Jeopardy. A lover of classical music, especially Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, Tony took violin lessons as a child and piano lessons later in life. He arranged home concerts featuring his daughter and granddaughter and took great pride in suggesting pieces to be included in the program and inviting friends and family. An avid baseball player in his youth, Tony also organized family ball games. His annual superbowl party brought together sons and grandsons, regardless of actual interest in football. He followed the UCONN Women's basket team with great enthusiasm. A father of six, Tony loved children and he and his wife donated books regularly to support literacy in inner city schools.
Tony loved many things in life but none more than his dear wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Colleen. He also leaves his six children and their spouses: Christa & Janis, Bill & Karen, Lisa & Michael, Suzanne, Andrew & Evelyn, Justine and Brian. He also leaves 10 grandchildren: Michael, Sarah, Luke, Tony, Nicholas, Daniel, Matthew, Nathan, Martin and Christa. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Veillette and Madeleine Smethurst and many nieces, nephews and friends.
