Palm Beach Gardens, FL - Barbara Patricia Wihbey, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, formerly of Middlebury CT, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, October 7, 2022. Barbara persevered through illness and has now joined her husband, Joseph G. Wihbey, M.D., in heaven’s 19th hole.
Barbara’s quick wit, love of storytelling, and the advice she often shared will be missed by her extended family and many friends. She was a member of the Waterbury Country Club for over 40 years as well as the P.G.A. National Country Club and enjoyed golf and card games with the ladies.
Barbara was born in Waterbury, the daughter of George and Agnes (Gerillo) Norman. She was a graduate of Crosby High School and a proud graduate of Regis College, in Westin, MA. Although she was looking forward to attending law school, she changed plans to obtain her teaching certificate when Joe sent her a diamond ring in the mail. She married Joe following her graduation and immediately joined him traveling through Europe as he served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force.
Barbara and Joe returned from their “honeymoon,” to make their home in Middlebury, CT along with their children, Jean Wihbey and Renee Buice of Palm Beach Gardens; Joan Papa of North Palm Beach, FL, and Michael Papa of Waterbury CT; Linda Wihbey and Jack Pickering, of Waterbury; Laura and P.J. Conway of Palm Beach Gardens; Joseph and Dana Wihbey of Westbrook, CT and Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and Christopher and Nefra Wihbey of Prospect, CT.
Barbara’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, including her grandchildren Taryn Papa, Jillian and Dave Gravel; Christian and Gina Papa; Patrick and Adam Conway; Joseph, Peter and Natalie Wihbey; and Christopher Wihbey, Jr. and Brayden Wihbey. She was a great gram to Giavanna Papa and Levi Gravel.
Left to cherish her memory along with her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren, is her loving brother George Norman and sister-in-law Patricia. She was predeceased by sisters Noreen Ebling and Anne McKinnon. She was a very special aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wihbey will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John of the Cross Church 1263 West St, Middlebury to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Watertown.
