WATERTOWN - Berthe Wierzbicki 92, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully at the Watertown Convalarium, on May 28th, 2016, after a rewarding life. She is predeceased by her husband, Chester Wierzbicki and also her siblings, Fore, Madeline and Roger.
Berthe was born in Lanouee Morbihan, France; the daughter of the late Rene Gougeon and Emil Grandvalet. She was the monarch of our family and the quintessential French woman. She attended French schools, relocated to Paris during the German Occupation, working and studying nursing at a hospital. After the war ended, she met the love of her life; an American soldier from Pennsylvania named Chester Wierzbicki. They were married in Paris on June 1, 1946 and remained devoted. After initially living in Germany, they returned to the USA in 1948, eventually settling in Waterbury, CT. She loved her life and became a proud US citizen in 1952. Berthe worked at Lakewood Metals in Waterbury, CT for 25 years until her retirement.
Berthe was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. She especially adored her grandchildren and retired early to spend valuable time with them. She valued family, friends, French Heritage and the finer things in life. She survived a World War and welcomed any challenge. Her courage and work ethnic were admirable. Berthe adored her husband and remained by his side, until his passing five months ago. Berthe had a wonderful life, a devoted husband, loving family and loyal friends. She maintained a healthy lifestyle and remained active until the age of 89. She appreciated the numerous family outings and parties. She traveled extensively and cherished the many return trips to France. A rewarding life many would hope to achieve.
She leaves a son, Chester Wierzbicki and his wife Debbie of Watertown CT.; a daughter, Corinne Adkins and her husband, Thomas Adkins of Southbury; two grandchildren, Jason Adkins of Wallingford and Mellisa O'Keeffe and her husband, RJ O'Keeffe of Stamford and one great grandchild, Charley (CC) O'Keeffe. She also leaves an extended family in France that includes, Patrick Jouan and his wife Genu, and their children; Dominique Tahon and her husband Christian and their children; Jean Pierre Chassin, Elisa Gougeon, Corinne Ealet, Gerard Gougeon, Christian Gougeon, Bernard Gougeon, Guy Gougeon and their children and also Marlene and Greg Gannon of Venice, Florida. Berthe's family would like to thank the numerous care givers that provided excellent care during her time of need over the last three years. Special thanks to Visiting Angles of Brookfield, CT and live in care giver Rebecca Yanney; Vitas Hospice; Dr. Miller of Pro Physicians of Waterbury; and The Watertown Convalarium and Dr. Craig Czarsty. The family would like to extend a special thank you to friends and also Jacquelyn and Simon Magac who visited her frequently.
Berthe has embarked on a new journey but will be dearly missed. Bon voyage mon mere! Funeral services are private and there are no calling hours. Berthe will be buried at Mt Olivet Cemetery following a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Johns of Watertown. The O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville CT has been entrusted to assist the family with arrangements.
