Devoted Mother, Grandmother, Friend
WATERBURY - Mrs. Beverly Estelle (Engala) Zappone, 86, of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 12, 2024. She was the widow of the late Robert B. Zappone, her husband of 51 years.
Beverly was born in Waterbury on March 2, 1938, daughter of the late Thomas Engala and Estelle (Trotta) Engala Young. She was a proud graduate of the Wilby High School class of 1955 with one of her favorite memories being a Wilby cheerleader. During her life, Beverly worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles and held various jobs as a fitness instructor, a medical secretary and retired in 1998 from WATR-AM/WWYZ-FM radio as a collections secretary. She was a member of the original Ladies Guild of Our Lady of Loreto where she was also the CYO cheerleading coach during the 1970s. She enjoyed her yoga classes with her girlfriends and was happiest when cheering on her children and granddaughter. Beverly will be remembered by the dozens of “kids" that she welcomed into her house as “Ms. Zap” and for her famous quote “take your shoes off and keep your hands off the walls”. Her thoughtfulness and generous nature will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Beverly will be remembered by her children for all the prayers she said for them and sacrifices she made for them. Beverly leaves her daughter, Dina Lanteri and her granddaughter, Francesca Estelle Lanteri of Watertown; her son, Robert Zappone and his wife Michaele, their son, Brett Sergi and his wife Christine, their children, Carmella Grace and Brett Robert all of Thomaston. She is also survived by her sister, Sandra Young of Middlebury; her sister-in-law, Rosalie Celello of Woodbury; her brothers-in-law, Richard Zappone and his wife Patricia and Anthony Zappone and his wife Patricia both of Waterbury; her best friend, Eleanor Salamone of Watertown; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Frank Lanteri.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 23rd at 10:00am at Our Lady of Loreto Church 12 Ardsley Rd Waterbury CT 06708. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. There are no calling hours. Those planning to attend are kindly asked to meet directly at the church for Mass. The Casey -O’Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville CT 06779 has been entrusted to care for Beverly and her family during this most difficult time. To honor Beverly’s life and in lieu of flowers, the family is kindly requesting contributions be made in Beverly’s name to a charity of the donor’s choice.
