NEW BRITAIN - Capt. Hector Lopez, age 59, of New Britain passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 11th 2018 at Memorial - Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Maria (Rivera) Lopez.
Hector was born August 10th 1959 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Deacon Alejandro and Anna (Tirado) Lopez. He was a graduate of Kennedy High School and attended Berkelee College of Music in Boston where he studied music arrangement. Hector has spent the last 31 years working for the City of Waterbury Fire Department, most recently stationed as a lieutenant at Engine 11- Highland Ave and was a member of their honor guard. Hector lived for music and was a talented musician who had the ability to play just about any instrument he picked up, his favorites being the trumpet and bass. He enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to tour around the world to perform at many different music events. He was a parishioner of St Joachim Parish in New Britain and was a choir member of St Joseph Church in Bristol. Hector was proud to serve as a board member for the Rivera Memorial Foundation. Hectors other passion in his life was his family - he was always happiest while surrounded by them listening and playing to some of his favorite music.
Besides his wife of 24 years, Maria, Hector is survived by his three daughters; Denise Nazario and her husband, Joel of Newington, Grace Lopez, and her fiancé, Axsel Cintron Jr. of New Britain, and Annette Lopez of New Britain. He also leaves his brothers, Deacon Alex Lopez and his wife, Judy of Oakville, and Robert Lopez and his wife, Gloria of Bristol in addition to his grandchildren, Joel, Emanuel, Isabella, Jacob, Noah, and Mia as well as other extended family members and many friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Lopez with full Fire Departmental Honors will be held on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Todos los Santos - All Saints/St Anne's Shrine South Main St. Waterbury when a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Those planning to attend are kindly asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury, Relatives and friends may visit with Hector's family on Sunday afternoon from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St Waterbury Ct. 06705. In lieu of flowers to honor Hector's memory, donations may be made to the Rivera Memorial Foundation at 186 Cherry St Waterbury, CT 06702.
