Vietnam Veteran, Drag Racer
WATERTOWN - Charles Edmund Sabis, 77, of Watertown, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, at St. Francis Hospital. Mr. Sabis was the husband of Joyce Emanuel Sabis, retired school teacher at Cross Street School in Naugatuck.
Chuck was born on October 22, 1944, in Waterbury the son of the late Frank J. and Gertrude Madden Sabis. He graduated from Kaynor Technical High School and was drafted into the United States Army. Chuck served honorably with the 1st Cavalry Division, 173rd Airborne Brigade in the Vietnam War. When he returned home, he obtained two associate degrees at Mattatuck Community College, married Joyce, and had two sons. He worked as an auto mechanic and service manager at a number of car dealerships. Later in his life, Chuck transferred his passion for cars to starting his own business selling motor sports collectibles and memorabilia, and was the proprietor of Westbury Motorsports until his death. Chuck had a lifelong passion for drag racing and he spent a number of years as a mechanic for an alcohol funny car, an experience that brought him great joy.
Left to honor his legacy and cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce Sabis; his sons; Chris Sabis of Nashville, Tennessee, and Brian Sabis of Watertown; a sister, MaryGertrude Sabis Sholtis Jones of Henderson, Nevada; two grandchildren, Robert and John Sabis of Nashville, Tennessee, four nieces, and two nephews.
A Memorial Gathering to celebrate Chucks life will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at O’Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main St, Oakville, CT 06779, followed immediately by a brief prayer service and full military honors. To honor Chuck’s memory and in lieu of flowers, donations to the veterans’ charity of the donor’s choice would be greatly appreciated by his family.
