Charles Sauter

January 23, 1922 — September 9, 2016

Charles Augustus Sauter was named after Charles Augustus Lindberg. Near the end of his life "We" was said to be his favorite book, and sometimes he went by Chas. He told many stories about his parents and time working as the head engineer for the Bulova Watch Company. His favorite tale was the story of how his mother and father met. He would recount a narrative of romance that blossomed between nurse and patient. His father had lost his leg in an accident landing him at the first United States hospital where his mother was the head nurse. Charlie grew up knowing his father for his wooden leg and work as a Methodist minister.

Among many other accomplishments, Charles was responsible for designing and patenting the first timekeeper to work in space. It allowed NASA to complete a successful moon landing by insuring accurate timekeeping on the lunar surface.

Charles was a pioneer in the horological field and will be greatly missed. His loss is more than material. With him marks the departure of a knowledge that may never be reclaimed. The heritage he bestowed for future generations remains relevant, and will grow only more so with passing time.
