OAKVILLE - Chester Charles Gursky Sr. age 83 of Oakville, passed away on Sunday, May 12th, 2019 at The Vitas Innovative Care Unit at Saint Mary's Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after a brief illness. He was the husband of Rose M. (Valerio) Gursky.
Mr. Gursky was born July 15, 1935 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Charles V. and Gladys (Podsiadlik) Gursky. He was raised in the Waterbury area and was a graduate of Leavenworth High School. Chester proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War Conflict where he participated in several campaigns and received the Army Good Conduct medal before being honorably discharged. He then served for several years with the Army National Guard Reserves. Chester spent close to 50 years working for Timex Corporation, retiring as an Operations Manager. He was a member of the Oakville VFW Post 7330 and parishioner of Saint Mary Magdalen Church. Chester enjoyed 48 years coaching the Oakville /Watertown Little League Major Division Yankee team. The Yankee team was retired with him in his honor. He was a member of the Water Oak Gold Circle of Sports and a gold ring recipient. In addition, he received the Watertown Rotary Club's Alexander Alves Award. Chester was also the Color Guard Director for the Oakville -Watertown Drum Corps where he led the girls to a Connecticut state winning championship. He affectionately nicked named the girls "Chester's Angels". Chester also served as a judge for the Connecticut Fife and Drum Corps. Chester enjoyed music, playing his guitar, and spending time working on, detailing, and polishing his cars. What was most important to Chester though, was his family. He was always happiest while spending time with them and being surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.
Among his survivors are his children; Richard Gursky and his wife, Jennifer of Oakville, Chester Gursky Jr. and his wife, Robin of Watertown, Patricia Iaiennaro and her husband, Anthony Jr. of Oxford, and Ann Marie Schell and her husband, Timothy of Oakville. In addition, he leaves his brother, Richard Gursky and his wife, Marilyn of Watertown as well as his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Daniel, Emily, Timothy, Jr., Miranda, and Trevor as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters; Florence Palombo and Natalie Ruth Fuller.
Funeral services for Mr. Gursky will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. when a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Saint Mary Magdalen Church 16 Buckingham St. Oakville, CT. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery Watertown. Relatives and friends may visit with Chester's family at the O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville, Ct 06779 on Wednesday evening from 5:00-7:00pm.
