Bethesda MD Chief Petty Officer Dabet Marrero Velez, Cryptologic Technician Interpretive Specialist, age 40, of Odenton MD, formerly of Waterbury, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD after an extended illness. She was the wife of Master Chief Javier Velez Ramos.
Chief Velez was born July 29, 1967 in Rio Piedras Puerto Rico, the daughter of Mrs. Antonia Ferrucci of Waterbury and Pedro E. Marrero of Puerto Rico. She was a graduate of St. Margaret's Grammar School, Notre Dame Academy, Manhattanville College and Charter Oak College. She holds a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Political Science and Economics. She enlisted in the Navy on August 12, 1991. She completed Recruit Training in Orlando, FL and received follow-on training at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA in Chinese Mandarin.
Her first assignment in March 1993 was at NSGA Kunia, HI, where she was initially assigned as a Radio Telephone Operator/Supervisor, and later as an Analyst and reporter. During this tour she was selected as the 1995 Junior Sailor of the Year. In 1997 she reported to NSGA Medina, TX, for duty as Direct Support Operator/Supervisor. During this tour she was on board the USNS CAPABLE, the USNS INDOMITABLE and the USNS STALWART. It was during this tour that she qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist.
In June of 1997, Chief Velez reported to the National Security Agency, for duty under instruction. In October 1997 she returned to NSGA Medina, TX, for another tour. During this tour, she was assigned as the Command Program Language Manager (CLPM) and as the training Department LPO. She would later become the Department Leading Chief Petty Officer. Upon transfer from NSGA Medina, TX, in October of 2003, she reported to Commander Naval Security Group (CNSG) Headquarters Fort Meade, MD. While at HQ, she was assigned to the Office of Transformation and later to the Office of the Inspector General as an Inspector/Investigator. In April 2005, Chief Velez transferred to NSGA Fort Meade, MD. She was currently assigned to the Signals Intelligence Directorate as a language analyst.
In addition to various unit awards Chief Velez's personal awards include, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three Gold stars, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one Gold star. On the 10th of October, 2007 she was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
Besides her husband, mother and father, Chief Velez leaves a son, Javier Velez Marrero and a step-daughter, Ciara Velez, both of Odenton MD, her sister, Soraya Marrero of Waterbury, her step father, Capt. Dominic Ferrucci, Waterbury Police Dept (retired), two step-brothers; Sgt. Daniel R. Ferrucci and Geoffrey Ferrucci both of Waterbury, her step-sister, Mrs. Marcus (Beth Ann) Albino of Waterbury, three nephews; Victor, Christian and Brendon Cuevas all of Waterbury. She also leaves several aunts and uncles; Mrs. Eduardo (Lillian) Velez of Port Charlotte FL, Mrs. David (Mary Ann) Velez, Mrs. Raul (Genevieve) Santiago and Miss Dolores Rodriguez all of Waterbury and Jose L. Rodriguez, Thomas Rodriguez, Robert Rodriguez, Gerald Rodriguez, Manuel Rodriguez and Carlos Rodriguez all of Waterbury as well as many cousins.
Funeral Services for Chief Velez with Full Military Honors will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home 1581 East Main St. Waterbury to Sacred Heart/Sagrado Corazon Church, 13 Wolcott St. Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church for 9:45am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday evening from 4-8pm. Memorial donations in Chief Velez's memory may be made to Sacred Heart /Sagrado Corazon Church, 13 Wolcott St. Waterbury CT 06705.
