AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - Dennis H. Carroll age 62 of Oakville died October 4, 2011 at Saint Mary's Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Sharon A. (Mahon) Carroll of 25 years, father of two sons Jeffrey D. and Brian T. "BC" Carroll both of Oakville, his loving mother Edna M. (Kubik) Carroll, three sisters Susan Hallman of Brookfield, Tina Toussaint and Denise Bobbie of New Milford, four nephews and a niece.
Dennis was born March 14, 1949 in Bethel, a son of Edna M (Kubik) Carroll and the late Harry L. Carroll. He was a graduate of Bethel High School, attended Norwalk Community College and earned his Nursing Degree at the former Mattatuck Community College. Dennis also attended NYU where he studied film and movies. Dennis proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War and earned an Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. He worked for the State of Connecticut and dedicated 35 years of service throughout various agencies within the state. Dennis began his career as a psychiatric Aide and after completing nursing school, worked at Fairfield Hills Hospital in Newtown as a staff nurse and then became the nurse supervisor. Dennis then moved on to the staff development and educated the newly hired staff at the hospital. From there, Dennis became the program director of Berkshire Woods Treatment Center Detox unit where he remained until it closed and moved to Connecticut Valley Hospital Campus. He then became the director for the Substance Abuse Unit along with the Detox Unit. Dennis retired from state service to enjoy his life and spend time with his family.
Dennis was an avid nature lover who was enthralled with hiking, biking and outdoor adventures. He enjoyed weekend excursions with his family throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire.
Dennis was asked to consult with MCCA Program in Danbury where he assisted with program development and policy. He then joined the team at MCCA and became the program director for Detoxification & Evaluation Program. Dennis loved to teach and always was a man to give back to his community. He was invited to teach at Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) where he came full circle as NVCC was the former Mattatuck Community College where he initially began his career.
A private funeral service for Dennis will be held on Tuesday October 11 at 8 p.m. at the O'Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main Street Oakville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, 1075 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT 06708.
