Waterbury - Donald E. Cruess Sr. age 88 of Waterbury passed away on Wednesday February 13, 2013 at Middlebury Convalescent Center after an extended illness surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Vera (Mason) Cruess.
Mr. Cruess was born April 23rd 1924 the son of the late Raymond and Charlotte (Moran) Cruess. He was a graduate of Crosby High School where he was the captain of the football team and continued his education at Wesleyan University before being drafted into the US Army during WWII. He proudly served his country overseas which lead him to meet the love of his life Vera. Upon returning from the war with his new bride at his side, he began working in his family markets "Cruess Market" before becoming a quality control manger for Timex and eventually Buell Industries/Anchor Fastener for many years before his retirement. During his retirement Donald served as a Deacon at Saint Francis Xavier church for over 25 years and was very active in the parish as well as being a member of the Legion of Mary where he spent countless days visiting ill parishioners. He enjoyed reading and was an avid NY Giants and Boston Redsox fan.
Besides his wife Vera of 67 years, Donald is survived by his children Donald Cruess Jr. of Meriden, David Cruess and his wife Joy of Columbia MD, Daniel Cruess and his wife Sue of Wilmington NC. Dean Cruess and his wife Stacy of Storrs, Diane Maxwell of Pleasanton, CA, Deborah and her husband Jim Beveridge of Watertown, Darcy and her husband Rick Braisted of Bethel, his 16 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his daughter Donna (Cruess) Walsh, his son in-law Robert Maxwell, daughter in-law Donna (Komerowski) Cruess, as well as his siblings Raymond Cruess, Thomas Cruess, and Florence Eustace.
Funeral services for Mr. Cruess will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Saint Francis Xavier Church 625 Baldwin St Waterbury to celebrate the liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Rites of Committal will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury.
