AT THE CASEY-O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME - WATERBURY - Venice FL Donald W. Gray of Venice, FL and Prospect, CT., died March 17, 2011 at the Venice Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness. He was the husband of Ruth (Finn) Gray.

Don was born on February 10, 1925, in Meriden, CT, the son of the late Francis X and Marie (Terrill) Gray, Don joined the Navy the day after graduating from
high school and proudly served his country during World War II. After discharge he attended and graduated from Kenyon College in Ohio as an English major. He obtained his teaching certificate and Masters degree from Southern Ct State University. Don was a retired educator teaching 32 years in the Region 16 School District. A participant of the CT Writing Project with the University of CT, Don was influential in the development of the Oratorical Contest, sponsored by the American Legion, which just celebrated it's 50th year of existence. Don was an accomplished artist of various mediums but his passion was sailing, especially the waters of Long Island Sound. He was a mentor to many novice sailors, sharing his love, skill and respect of water, wind and sail.

Beside his wife, Don leaves nine children, ten grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service "Happy Hour" will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 2:00pm at the Gray home 3 Robindale Dr. Prospect CT 06712. His remains will be dispersed at sea, in his favorite spot on Long Island Sound. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donors choice. The Casey - O'Donnell Family Funeral Home 1581 East Main St Waterbury has been entrusted to assist the family with arrangements.
