Donald M. Rinaldi

AT THE CASEY - O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME- Waterbury - WATERBURY - Mr. Donald M. Rinaldi, of Morton Rd. Waterbury and former State Senator from the 16th Senatorial District of CT, passed away early Saturday morning, with his loving and devoted family by his side at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of 49 years of Mary C. (O'Brien) Rinaldi who died just four short years ago.

Donald was born August 20, 1931 in Waterbury the son of the late Michael J and Marietta (Mendillo) Rinaldi. He was educated in local schools and was a veteran of the US Marine Corp. He was a licensed real estate agent, associated with various firms in Waterbury, before opening his own agency, Campion & Rinaldi Real Estate.

His political career began in the early seventies as President of the Waterbury Young Democrats and he served the City of Waterbury as both a Police and Fire Commissioner. He was elected to the post of City Tax Collector in 1975 and served in that position for 10 years, implementing many modern day collection process'. In 1986, he was elected State Senator for the 16th Senatorial District, which included Waterbury, Wolcott and Southington and he served in that position with distinction for two years. He then founded Rinaldi Discount Liquors with his family in 1989 and remained active in that business until his retirement.

He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Sheriden Council for many years, a proud member of the Italian - American Democratic Club of Waterbury and was still an active and current member of the Waterbury Democratic Town Committee. He was a parishioner of St Leo the Great Church in Waterbury.

Donald is survived by three children, Michael J. Rinaldi and his wife Theresa of Waterbury and their two children, Michael and Christina, Donald S. Rinaldi and his wife Janice of Southington and their two children Donald M. and Allie and Patti R. Delage and her husband Thomas of Watertown and their son Thomas "TJ". He also leaves several nieces and nephews. His brothers Arthur and Richard Rinaldi and sisters, Evelyn Caisse and Eleanor Theriault are deceased.

The Rinaldi family would like to acknowledge and offer their personal appreciation to Drs. Hill and Bowen and the nursing staff at St. Mary's Hospital for the kind and compassionate care that they provided to their Dad during his illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Rinaldi will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 8:00 am from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home 1581 East Main St Waterbury to St Leo the Great Church, Bentwood Dr. Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am. Burial with full military honors will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 pm - 8pm. Memorial donations in Mr. Rinaldi's memory may be made to St. Mary's Hospital Development Fund, 56 Franklin St Waterbury CT 06706 or to "Meals on Wheels" c/o N.O.W.
