Dorothy Messner West

May 22, 1927 — August 14, 2023

Devoted to her family and her faith

WOLCOTT – Dorothy (Messner) West, age 96 of Wolcott formerly of Naugatuck passed away on Monday, August 14, 2023 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was born on May 22, 1927 in Waterbury, the daughter of the late Otto M. and Dorothea J. (Nissen) Messner. She grew up in Naugatuck, graduated from Naugatuck High School, and Post Jr. College where she was Valedictorian of her graduating class. Dorothy went on to hold secretarial positions at the Bristol Company, Kalart Victor Corporation, and retired as administrative secretary at First Congregational Church of Waterbury. Most recently she was a member of First Congregation Church in Waterbury where she served on the Board of Deacons on Church Council, L.E. Schlegel Fund Committee, and a member of craft, sewing, and noon beams groups at Church. Prior to joining First Congregational Church, she was a member of the Wolcott Congregational Church where she served as a Church Clerk for several years. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading, solving crossword puzzles, never missed a Jeopardy show, and genealogy research to which she traced her Messner ancestors to 1634 in Trossingen, Germany. All of these important life activities pale in comparison to what Dorothy loved most in life, her family and spending as much time as she could with all of them. She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love her.

Left to honor her legacy and cherish her memory is her daughter, Elaine Maynard, her son, Richard (Cherl) West, son-in-law ,Daniel Edes, her five grandchildren; Ronald Rogers, Amy (Alex) Peck, Christopher Edes, Ian (Courtney) West, and Anne Tilton, four great grandchildren; three brothers; Donald (Carol) Messner, William (Maxine) Messner, and Richard (Joan) Messner, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Dorothy was predeceased by her daughter. Ellen Edes, sister, Clara Richards, and her beloved faithful and loving Lhasa Apso, Christy.
