WATERBURY- Edmund A. "Ned" Shanahan, age 63, of Highland Ave. Waterbury, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. He was the husband of Mary (Meehan) Shanahan.

Ned was born on October 28, 1948, in Waterbury, the son of the late Patrick J. and Julia Halloran Shanahan, both of Abby Dorney, County Kerry, Ireland. He was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Grammar School and Kennedy High School where he was a distinguished basketball athlete. He then earned his Associates Degree at Post College and worked for 30 years as a driver with UPS retiring in 2005. Ned loved to travel and he and Mary visited nearly 400 National Parks throughout the U.S. Ned was an avid UConn basketball and football fan and attended many games and he was also a Notre Dame University fan and was even a member of the mid-Hudson Valley Notre Dame Club. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the 1900 Club and was particularly proud of his Irish Heritage. Ned attended the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Besides his wife Mary, Ned leaves a daughter, Wendy Shanahan of Niantic CT, a son, Michael of Greenwich CT, his brother, Joseph and his wife Carmela of Southbury and two sisters, Mary Albright and her husband Frank of Farmington and Elsie Torres and her husband Jesus of Chihuahua, Mexico as well as several nieces and nephews. Ned also leaves many members of the Meehan family who will miss him dearly. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Ann Lapham.

Funeral services for Mr. Shanahan will be held on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 10:00a.m.at the Basilica of Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St Waterbury to Celebrate the Liturgy of Christian Burial. Rites of Committal and Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Those planning on attending are asked to meet directly at the church. Family and friends may visit at the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home 1581 East Main St Waterbury CT on Thursday, July 5, 2012 from 4:00 till 8:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Ned's memory may be made to: The Joseph P.
