SOUTHBURY, CT - Elizabeth Rose (Betty) Cappabianca, 92, passed away Tuesday, December 3rd at Pomperaug Woods Health Center following a brief illness.
Born February 4, 1921 in London, Ontario, Canada, she was the youngest child of Joseph and Francesca (Scordamaglia) Raffaele. She attended schools in London and Chatham, Ontario, culminating in a nursing degree. After graduation she moved to Old Greenwich, CT to join her brother Dr. Frank Raffaele in his medical practices in Stamford and Manhattan. On September 22, 1950 she married the love of her life, Zanetto Francis (Cappy) Cappabianca who owned a travel and insurance agency in Stamford. Together they had three children born between 1951 and 1956. In 1957, Betty became a naturalized American citizen.
Betty's Catholic faith was of extreme importance to her. Over the years she was an active participant in the Rosary Altar Society of St. Cecilia's Church, the Emmaus Community, and various other prayer and rosary groups. She knitted prayer shawls which she often gave as gifts.Following Cappys' death in 1968, her great talent for sewing, knitting and other handicrafts led her to open a retail fabric store in Stamford. Her other interests included field trips offered by the Stamford Museum as well as dancing, opera and classical music. In 2004, she moved to Pomperaug Woods in Southbury to be closer to her daughter. Betty's warm and sincere way with people endeared her to many during her long and fulfilling life. Her caring qualities were a model to those who knew her and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her three children: Frank (Linda) of Glens Falls, NY, Geralyn of Southbury, CT, and Carl (Lisa) of Chatham, NJ; five grandchildren: Jennifer Abbott-Cole (Jesse Cole) of Litchfield, CT, Drew (Sarah) Cappabianca of Glens Falls, NY, Amy Abbott of Casco, ME, Daniel and Kirsten Cappabianca of Chatham, NJ; two step great-grandchildren: Eben and Alyis McGee-Bierman of Glens Falls, NY, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Zanetto, and all of her siblings. Many thanks to the staff at Pomperaug Woods Health Center for their special care of Betty.
