THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE ASSISTING AND CARING FOR THE FAMILY OF MR. & MRS. SAMELA

MIDDLEBURY - Mr. Andrew Samela, age 93 of Middlebury, passed away on January 31, 2021. He entered into the gates of heaven under the care of his daughters and comfort of his home. He was the loving husband of Eugenie (Parent) Samela to whom he was happily married for 70 years.

Eugenie "Jean" (Parent) Samela, age 90 of Middlebury, passed away peacefully at her home, into the loving embrace of our Lord and Savior, on Wednesday, April 13, 2021 after a very brief illness. She was the widow of Andrew Samela, her husband of 70 years who passed away on January 31, 2021.

Andrew was born on March 23, 1927 in Thomaston the son of the late John and Angela (Sacco) Samela. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School, Class of 1945 and proudly served his country during World War II, stationed in Germany. Andrew was employed for over 47 years as an expert tool and die maker at Timex. Andy and Jean resided in Middlebury for over 65 years in the brick house they built as a young married couple. He loved his home and yard, spending many hours planting and trimming trees and shrubs, and spending countless hours in his vegetable garden. He also loved his Ford's especially his Mustangs at one time owning three. Andy was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was always happy to pass along his knowledge of gardening, cars, world history and so much more. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends alike.

Jean was born May 2, 1930 in Waterbury the daughter of the late Albert and Marguerite (Theriault) Parent. She graduated from Chase Grammar School and Waterbury Catholic High School. Jean and Andy married in 1950 and moved to Middlebury where they built their one of a kind, beautiful brick house where they raised their four children and lived out their final years, right to the very end. Jean loved spending time at the shore or outdoors whether it was camping at Hammonassett State Park, gardening at home or the many vacations with her family on Nantucket. Jean lived life to the fullest! Traveling was a passion of Jeans from the east coast, Maine to Florida and even visiting Europe several times. Her many interests included painting and opera but nothing was more important to her than her family. She was a loving mother and grandmother often babysitting for her grandchildren as well as hosting many holiday celebrations. Jean also loved dogs. Her beloved golden retrievers; Brandy, Reggie and Bear provided so much enjoyment over the years. Her final dog, Mini, a much loved and spoiled Bichon Frise was a comfort by her side to the very end. Jean was also a lifelong "learner" and an independent thinker. Later in life she attended classes at NVCC and the UCONN OLLI programs. She was an active member of the St John of the Cross Altar Society and she became an active communicant at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

Left to honor their parent's legacy and treasure their memories are their daughters; Janet Samela-Sorrell and her husband, David of Bethlehem and Marcie Pagliarulo and her husband, Joseph of Groton MA, son, John Samela and his wife, Sharon of Ansonia. Andy and Jean were blessed with several grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Andrew also leaves his sister, Mary Sprano.
They were predeceased by their youngest son, Andrew "Drew" Samela of Watertown in 2007 who will never be forgotten. Jean was predeceased by her brothers, Edward and Richard Parent while Andrew was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Nordby and brothers, Leonard and Nickolas.
