Frances Mary Kearney ?" age 77, of Lakeview Ave. Waterbury, died Wednesday evening at Saint Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of George W. Kearney.
Mrs. Kearney was born December 2nd, 1931 in Waterbury, CT, the daughter of the late Timothy and Mary (Murphy) McKenna. She was a graduate of Saint Mary's Grammar School and Waterbury Catholic High. A loving and devoted homemaker, she would entertain many of the neighborhood children at her home on any given day and was considered to be a second mother to many. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed celebrating and participating in many Irish festivities. She was a Past President and a Lifetime Member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Monsignor Slocum Division # 1. She also was honored to be selected as the City of Waterbury, Irish Mayor of the day in 1989 and enjoyed competing in Irish step-dancing along with her daughters. Frances was an avid traveler and while visiting Rome, she was blessed by the Pope on two separate occasions. She was a parishioner of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and one of the original choir members of the Immaculate Conception Church as well as a former member of the Madonna Guild of Saints Peter and Paul Church.
Besides her devoted husband of 57 years, Mrs. Kearney is survived by five children, Thomas G. Kearney, of Waterbury; Timothy G. Kearney, and his wife, Laura of East Hampton, CT; Kevin F. Kearney, and his wife, Elizabeth of Southington; Arlene Hamel and her husband Roland T. Hamel Jr. of Waterbury, and Kathleen Lavaway and her husband Mark of Prospect. She also leaves a sister, Eileen (McKenna) Kieffer and her husband Paul of Prospect, two sisters in-law, Rita Colligan of Westfield MA; and Gertrude Kearney of New Britain as well as 14 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins She is also pre deceased by a brother John J. McKenna.
Funeral services for Mrs. Kearney will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 9:00 am from the Casey ?" O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main St Waterbury to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends are requested to go directly to the church. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday April 3, 2009 from 4 till 8pm.
