AT THE CASEY - O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME Waterbury - Mr. Francis E. Hughes, age 77, of Brookview Ave. Waterbury, died Tuesday at Waterbury Hospital after a brief illness.

Francis was born in Waterbury on September 20, 1931, a son of the late Charles K. Sr. and Helene (McGrail) Hughes. He was a graduate of Wilby High School and proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army. He was a salesman at Sears and retired after more than 25 years of service. He was a member of the VFW Post 201 in Waterbury. He was an avid reader, loved playing cards especially setback and cribbage but most of all he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a contributor and supporter of both the March of Dimes and the Southwest Indian Childrens Fund.

Francis leaves his son, Michael Francis Hughes of Saugerites NY, his daughter, Diane Sullivan of Brownsville TN, five grandchildren, Adrienne, David, Jeremy, Francis and Sebastian and one great granddaughter, Rose Emiliana. He also leaves 6 brothers, Thomas A. Hughes of Arvada CO, Wilbur S. Hughes of Watertown, Peter Hughes of Prospect, Ralph E. Hughes of Chandler AZ, George M. Hughes of Cheshire CT and Timothy A. Hughes of New Britain, 4 sisters, Helene Shay of Windsor CT, Alice Provenzano of Bristol CT, Geraldine Vinez of Garland TX and Rosemary Shay of Niantic. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Diane Bianchi and 4 brothers, Charles K. Hughes Jr., John Joseph Hughes, Paul A. Hughes, and Christopher Hughes.

Funeral services for Mr. Hughes will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 10:00am at the Christ Episcopal Church, 2030 East Main St Waterbury with Rev. Dr. Charles Bevan, officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown CT. Family and friends may visit at the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main St Waterbury on Friday evening from 5 ?" 8 pm.
