WATERTOWN - Frederick Fenton Hubbell, Jr, 74, died on January 26 at his home in Watertown. Fred was born in Waterbury on December 28, 1942, the first child of Frederick and Mary (Pratt) Hubbell of Oakville. He attended Oakville and Watertown schools, graduating from Watertown High School in 1960.
Fred's life centered around cars and trucks. His first vehicle was an old Pontiac that he worked on and drove around the yard before he had his license, while he saved up so he could register it and pay for the insurance when he turned 16. He had many memorable vehicles over the years, among them a '55 Chevy Bel Air, a '61 Pontiac convertible, a'32 Ford pickup hot rod and a '62 Corvette.
Fred worked at Traver's Cities Service in Watertown during high school, and in 1961 he was hired at the Model Garage in Waterbury, working with his lifelong friend Ed Nelson. In 1968 he and Ed opened the new Watertown Shell, operating it together for about 18 years. Fred continued to run the Shell station alone, and later opened and operated Hub's Automotive until he was disabled by a stroke.
Fred is survived by his two sisters, Margaret (Peg) Byrne of Troy, ME and Elizabeth (Polly) Gosselin of Saco, ME, nephews Kenneth Byrne of Providence RI, Anthony Gosselin and wife Jaime of Wells, ME and Nicholas Gosselin and wife Amanda of Bradenton, FL, and nieces Sheila Gardiner and husband Gary of Troy, ME and Kelly McCormick and partner Geoff Smith of Clifton, ME. He also leaves many great and great-grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Douglas Byrne and Michael Gosselin.
A lifelong resident of Oakville and Watertown, Fred lived alone. After his health deteriorated and he had difficulty getting around, his many good friends kept track of him and made sure he was safe and that his needs were met. Peg and Polly are forever indebted to these friends - they were family to this independent guy who really didn't like to accept help, and definitely not from his sisters.
A memorial service will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 262 Main Street, Oakville on Saturday March 4 at noon. It will be followed by an informal gathering at Ro's Restaurant, 841 Main Street, Oakville, where Fred so often occupied "his" seat at the bar. All are invited to come and share pizza and memories.
