Retired Corrections Officer
WATERBURY - Gary M. Phelan age 59 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Marianne (Hopkins) Phelan.
Gary was born February 18, 1958 in Waterbury, CT, the son of Inez (Chase) Carlson of Oxford and the late William A. Phelan. He was educated in local schools and proudly served his country with the US Navy aboard the USS Kitty Hawk from 1976 till 1982 having achieving the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. Gary spent many years working for the State of Connecticut, Department of Corrections retiring from Manson Youth Institution in Cheshire. After retiring, he spent the last 8 years working as a security guard at Bozzuto's Inc. Gary loved to golf and could be found most days at the East Mountain Golf course where he made many friends and participated in many tournaments and leagues. He was exceptionally proud of achieving a hole-in-one at Timberlin Golf Course hole #12 in 2007. If Gary wasn't golfing, he was always happiest while spending time with family and friends.
Besides his loving wife, Marianne of 32 years, Gary is survived by his daughters, Rachael Schmersahl and her husband, Aaron of Monterey, CA and Michelle Phelan and her fiancé, Timothy Anderson of Waterbury, his sisters, Suzanne Laskevich and her husband, Rich, Cynthia Bradshaw, Marcia Gaffney and her husband, Gary, his brother, Russell Phelan and his wife, Juanita and his sister, Margaret Phelan as well as his step mother, Rose Phelan, his four grandchildren, Jesse, Jacob, Embry, & T.J. as well as many friends and extended family members. He is predeceased by his stepfather, Carl Carlson.
Gary's family would like to thank and acknowledge their friends, Bob Parziale, Frank Desiderio, Bill McEntee and his special niece, Courtney Russell as well as the Perry and Nesta families for all the love and support they have provided to Gary and his family throughout the years.
Funeral Services for Mr. Phelan will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 3:30pm at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd. Waterbury, CT 06705. Burial will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
