AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME Mr. George Frederick Collier, age 91, of Pond St. Oakville died Tuesday at Waterbury Extended Care Facility after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of the late Shirley Irene (Bradshaw) Collier.
George was born in Montreal Canada on July 22, 1917 the son of the late Arthur and Mary Rose (Trickey) Collier. He has been a resident of Oakville since 1921, educated in the Watertown School System and was a job setter operator at the Oakville Pin Shop for many years, retiring in 1980. He was a veteran of the US Army, having proudly served his country during World War II. George was a member of the American Legion Post 195 for more than 60 years. As a Charter member, he served as Adjutant, Commander and Historian. He was an active member of the Union Congregational Church in Oakville where he served as a deacon as well as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Building Committee. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America for most of his life and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. George was a Mason, a member of the Civil Air Patrol and a member of the New Haven Railroad Historical Society. His hobbies included model trains, planes and ships, woodworking, woodcarving, drawing and photography.
George is survived by two sons, Kenneth Collier and his wife, Claire of Bethlehem and David Collier of Oakville; a daughter, Nancy Leach and her husband Gerald of Vermont, four grandchildren; Joanne Leach and her husband Allan Scaviola, Gerald Leach Jr. and his wife Samantha, Beth Calabrese and her husband Eric and Douglas Leach all of Watertown and three great grandchildren; John Scaviola, Maigen and Colin Leach. George's sisters, Hazel Gaylord and Pearl Collier are deceased.
Funeral services for Mr. Collier will be held on Friday, January 16, 2009 at 9:00 am from the O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville to Union Congregational Church 167 Buckingham St Oakville for a funeral service at 10:00am. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday, January 15, 2009 from 5-8pm.
