"Purple Heart and Bronze Star Receipient"
WATERBURY - George Thomas Engratt, age 74 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully at home, with
his devoted wife by his side, on Thursday, September 12, 2019 following a long illness. He was the
husband of Karen (O'Neil) Engratt.
George was born on July 27, 1945 in Waterbury the son of the late John and Eleanor (Vilciauskas)
Engratt. He attended St. Joseph's Grammar School, Sacred Heart High School and the University of
Connecticut before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army. He was a Chief Warrant Officer and
helicopter pilot with the 101st Airborne Division and saw active duty in Vietnam. It was during this tour
that he was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for Valor and Bravery. George was employed as a
Rural Mail Carrier for the USPS assigned to the Prospect Office until his retirement in 2008. He was a
car enthusiast and a devoted UCONN fan and he enjoyed fishing and reading. He was a longtime
volunteer for the Shepherds Kitchen Ministry.
Left to remember, cherish and honor George's love and legacy, besides his wife of 45 years, Karen, are
his daughter, Meredith Engratt of Columbia SC and his brother, Michael Engratt and his wife, Angela of
Wolcott. In addition, he leaves 7 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his brothers, John and Philip.
Funeral services for Mr. Engratt will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019 when a Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church 182 Robbins St Waterbury at 12 noon. Those
planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with full military honors will follow in
Wonx Cemetery, Southington. Relatives and friends may visit with George's family on Friday evening
from 5:00 till 7:00 p.m. at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd
