WATERBURY - George W. Kearney - age 89, of Waterbury, died Sunday January 3, 2016 at the Vitas Innovative Care Unit of St. Mary's Hospital, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family after an extended illness. He was the widower of Frances M. (McKenna) Kearney.
Mr. Kearney was born November 10th 1926 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Downey) Kearney. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School and proudly served his country while stationed in Okinawa, Japan with the US Navy during World War II. George worked as a lineman for CL&P retiring as a supervisor after 42 years of dedicated service and served as the President of the Lineman's Club Association. He enjoyed gardening, canning, building model ship replicas and spending time at the beach in Milford. He also enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Ireland as well as his trips to Italy with the Basilica's Choir Group. He was a diehard UCONN Women's basketball fan, a member of the AOH and a parishioner of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. George was very proud of his Irish heritage and was honored to be the 2006 Waterbury Mayor of the Day.
Among his survivors are his four children, Timothy G. Kearney and his wife, Laura of East Hampton, CT, Kevin F. Kearney and his wife, Elizabeth of Farmington, Arlene Hamel and her husband, Roland T. Hamel Jr. of Waterbury and Kathleen Lavaway and her husband, Mark of Prospect. He also leaves his sister in laws Gertrude Kearney and Eileen Kieffer in addition to his 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his wife he was pre deceased by his son, Thomas G. Kearney, his brothers Robert and John Kearney, and his sister, Rita Colligan.
The Kearney Family would like to acknowledge and thank the doctors and staff at Saint Mary's Hospital, especially Doctor Jega, the staff on Xavier 3, and the Vitas Hospice Care staff for all the love and care provided to George and his family during his illness.
Funeral services for Mr. Kearney will be held on Wednesday, January 6th, 2016 at 10:00a.m. at The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St. when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with full military honors will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury.
