George L. Regan
WATERBURY- Mr. George L. Regan, age 75, of Dinatali Drive and Naples FL passed peacefully from this life on Monday evening after a long and courageous battle with cancer, his loving family at his side. He was the husband of Alice E. (Prior) Regan.
George was born September 23, 1932 in Waterbury, the son of the late George and Helene (Paskevicz) Regan. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School and High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Providence College. He completed his Masters degree from Central CT State University and attended the University of Hartford for his Sixth Year Teaching Certificate. He completed post graduate studies at UConn, Smith College and Yale University. He was a US Army veteran having proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict. He began his illustrious teaching career in the City of Waterbury in 1957 as a History and Social Studies teacher at Crosby High School. He became Chairman of the History Dept and was appointed Vice Principal in 1970. During his 17 year tenure, he achieved many distinguished and individual awards and citations including two Presidential citations. He was coach of the Crosby Golf Team, a distinguished member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges Accreditation Team as well as an adjunct Assistant Professor of History and Political Science at Post College for over 20 years. In 1987, he was appointed Principal of Kennedy High School and he retired from the City of Waterbury in 1989. In his retirement he remained active. He taught in the Waterbury Adult Education Program and volunteered with the City of Naples Police Dept while wintering in Florida. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Council # 24, the Waterbury BPOE Elks Lodge 265, the American Legion CT Post #1 and the Disabled American Veterans CT Chapter # 11. He served as Chairman for the Providence College Alumni Fund for the Waterbury Region. He was also involved with the Waterbury Teachers Association, the CT Education Association and the National Education Association.
As active and accomplished in his professional life as he was, that was second to family, faith and friends. He was an active parishioner of SS Peter and Paul Church serving as a CCD Teacher, member of the Home and School Association, and a member of the School Board and Development Committee. He was a recipient of the Archdiocese of Hartford HOPES Award for SS Peter and Paul Parish. An avid Red Sox fan he participated in demonstrations to be sure the Red Sox were televised in the Waterbury area. A week before his passing he was bestowed the CT Veterans Service medal in a ceremony at his home. Most of all he was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather and the consummate teacher, always instilling in his children and grandchildren the best of life's lessons.
Besides his loving wife of 52 years, George leaves a son, Stephen Regan and his wife Susan of Cheshire and two daughters, Debra Regan Gwiazdowski of Warwick RI and Susan Regan O'Brien of Waterbury, five loving grandchildren, Timothy, Kathryn, Christopher, Stephen and Melissa and two sisters, Eleanor and Judith Regan of Waterbury. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Regan will be held on Thursday April 24, 2008 at 11:00am from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main Street to Saints Peter and Paul Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury.
