George Tirado

July 7, 1953 — January 25, 2013

WATERBURY - George Tirado Sr. died peacefully at home on Friday, January 25, 2013 with all of his devoted family by his side. He was the husband of Aurwilda (Torres) Tirado who was his high school sweetheart, best friend and soulmate.

George was born on July 7, 1953 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of Samuel and Julia (Cintron) Tirado of Waterbury. He was a graduate of Kennedy High School, the University of Hartford and received his Masters of Science Degree in Secondary Administration and Supervision from Central CT State University. He was a teacher with the Waterbury School System for over 35 years and spent his entire career at Wilby High School where he was a well respected teacher in bilingual education, served as Athletic Director for over 18 years, Varsity Baseball Head Coach and Girls Basketball Coach. He led the Wilby Wildcats Girls Basketball Team to the NVL Title in 1991. George was truly committed and dedicated to Waterbury's Youth. He was actively involved in the Waterbury Astros baseball club which provided countless youngsters with the opportunity to play organized baseball in many of the area leagues. George loved sports. Its no coincidence that his home for so many years was directly across the street from the 50 yard line of Municipal Stadium. George was honored in many ways for his years of dedication to the Waterbury community and its youth. He was a member of the Silas Bronson, Waterbury Hall of Fame, an honored member of the Olympian Club, served as Waterbury's "Mayor of the Day" and even had the basketball court at Wilby High School, named in his honor. He also was a recipient of the Knights of Columbus Youth Dedication Award, Shakers Baseball Club Sportsman Award and the New Haven County Pinstripe Club Voice for Children Award. George was a member of the Waterbury Teachers Association, The Westbrook Elks Club, The CT Association of Athletic Directors and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association. George was an avid boater, loved being on the water and loved to travel. All of these accomplishments and pleasures in life were secondary to the love of his family, whom he cherished with all his heart. He will be greatly missed by all. He was a parishioner of Sagrado Corazon, Sacred Heart Church in Waterbury. The Tirado family would like to acknowledge and thank the dedicated staff at the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Hospital as well as the Waterbury VNA at Home, especially Shelly Guerrera for the kind and compassionate care they provided to George throughout his illness.

Besides his beloved wife of 37 years and his parents, George is survived by his two sons and their wives, George and Alison of Wolcott and Anthony and Erica of Cheshire, his adoring grandchildren, Alexa, Nathaniel George, Anthony and Gabriella. George also leaves his sisters, Maria Onelis Nieves, Lourdes Autunes and Noemi Acosta Tirado, his mother-in-law, Miriam Torres and his five brothers and sisters-in-law who were as close to George than anyone as well as many nieces and nephews. George also leaves many close and special friends and colleagues to mourn his loss. He was predeceased by his brother, Sammy Tirado Jr. and father-in-law Jorge Torres.
