GOSHEN - George Zabit, age 79 of Goshen, passed away unexpectedly on Monday May 25, 2020 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of 46 years to Rae (Ashborn) Zabit
George was born on April 2, 1941 in Waterbury the son of the late Peter and Tharsille (Audet) Zabit. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grammar School and graduated from Leavenworth High School in Waterbury. He began is distinguished career with the Waterbury Police Department in 1964 and for many years was the Police firearms instructor for the department. He excelled in firearms skills and training and shared his knowledge with the entire cadre of police officers. He was a certified firearms instructor and was a lifetime member of the NRA.
He retired from the W.P.D. in 1996 after 31 years of faithful service. Following his retirement, he was affiliated with the Litchfield Police Department as a fulltime constable and police officer, retiring in 2011.George's tireless service and commitment to law enforcement was matched only by his dedication to his family and friends. George was an affable guy who enjoyed each and every day. Adored by his family and friends, he always had a story to share and a sage piece of advice. He had a unique wealth of knowledge whether of firearms, sport shooting, woodworking household repairs landscape or everyday problems and issues. He will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.
Left to honor George's legacy and cherish his love and memories besides his faithful wife of 46 years, Rae are his children; sons; Peter and his fiancé, Stacey Camp of Goshen, Paul and his wife Jill of Bethlehem and his daughter, Carol Caroso and her husband, Vilmo of Myrtle Beach SC. George was blessed with 4 grandchildren; Aiden Zabit, Talia Zabit, Michelle Mancini and Anthony Caroso.
Due to government restrictions, funeral services for Mr. Zabit will be limited to a graveside committal service on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 11:00 a.m at Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown with the Rev Monsignor Robert Tucker, presiding. Immediate members of the family will be permitted outside and all those others present may view the services from the privacy of their own car via webcast services. Waterbury Police Departmental Honors will be accorded Mr. Zabit. A Memorial Mass for Mr. Zabit will be scheduled at St Louis de Montfort Parish, St Anthony of Padua Church, Litchfield as soon as regulations permit and will be announced publicly. Casey's Eastside Memorial has been honored to assist her family during this most difficult time. Please remember George and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
