WATERBURY CT - Georges Mouanes, affectionately known to family and friends as "Abou Bassam" age 90, of Barbara St. died peacefully Thursday, May 19th 2011, on his 90th birthday, at St Mary's Hospital, after receiving his last rights while surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He was the husband of Jana (Kordahi) Mouanes.
Abou Bassam was born May 19th 1921, in the town of Chebanieh, Mount Lebanon, the son of the late Elias and Namanam (Abourjeily) Mouanes. He lived most of his life in his beloved country of Lebanon before moving to the United States in the mid 1990's to be with his family. He enjoyed writing and had a fond love of nature and had many artistic talents. He had wrote from memory a manuscript documenting all of the traditions and customs of his beloved country of Lebanon. He was a member of Our Lady of Lebanon Church and had fervent and strong religious beliefs which he inherited from his family which always espoused the importance of religion, church, God and family. He was also a member of the American Lebanese Club.
Besides his wife of 52 years, Abou Bassam is survived by his two sons: Bassam Mouanes and his family of Prospect, Charbel Mouanes and his family of Wolcott, his daughters Narimane Mouanes of Waterbury and Fida (Mouanes) Skayem and her family of Waterbury, his brothers: The Rev. Professor Joseph Mouanes, former President of the University of the Holy Spirit Kaslik, of Lebanon and Joseph Mouanes, aka Abou Najib of Lebanon, his sisters: Mariam Kordahi, Wadihaa Jbeily, Badihaa Mouanes, and Therese Mouanes and their families, all of Lebanon. He also leaves his grandchildren; Christopher Skayem, Jonathan and Gabriella Mouanes as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers Habib and Badih Mouanes.
Funeral services for Mr. Mouanes will held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Our Lady of Lebanon Church Maronite Catholic Church, 8 East Mountain Rd. at 9:00am with a Service of the Holy Mysteries of Christian Burial celebrated by the Reverend Monsignor David George co-celebrated by Father Joseph Mouanes Father Nabil Mouanes, and Father Tony Mouanes. Those planning on attending are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Waterbury. A period of visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, May 20, 2011 at the Our Lady of Lebanon Church Hall from 5 - 8 pm.
A 40 days mass will be celebrated in his beloved hometown of Chebanieh, Mount Lebanon by his brother the The Rev. Professor Joseph Mouanes upon his return to Lebanon. Memorial donations in memory of Abou Bassam, may be made to Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church at 8 East Mountain Rd Waterbury, CT 06706.
