THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE ASSISTING AND CARING FOR THE FAMILY OF GERHART "GERRY" HERTEL
Gerhart (Gerry) Rudolph Hertel, age 97, passed away peacefully at home on October 11, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Plauen, Germany on April 24, 1923, son of the late Rudolph and Ella (Hellinger) Hertel. He was the loving husband of Berniece ("Bunnie") Hertel, who held his hand during his final moments.
He emigrated from Germany at the age of 4, and his childhood was spent in New Jersey. As a young man he lived in California before returning to the Northeast. He raised his two children in Randolph, Vermont, and his final residence was Waterbury, Connecticut. He always remarked that his favorite place to reside was Waterbury.
Gerry was an accomplished Toolmaker, working in many manufacturing shops, retiring from Hubbell, Inc. in 1990. He had many interests and hobbies. He loved fishing and golfing, proudly remembering that he played Pebble Beach, before it became impossible to get a tee time. He was an accomplished accordionist, and in his younger years he played in bands. In later years, his love was playing with the Connecticut Accordion Orchestra. He belonged to the dance club ChaRumBo and spent many a Saturday night dancing the night away with Bunnie. He enjoyed books, and read often to his children when they were young. He was a lifetime member of the Masons, receiving the recognition for being a 50 year member. He was a member of the Prospect, Cheshire, and Waterbury senior centers and was regularly found playing setback with these groups. He was always searching for a partner to play in chess. He enjoyed going to tag sales where he would search for old cameras and other bargains. He also loved to travel with his wife Bunnie, with a bucket list of visiting the national parks as well as international travel. He was a staunch supporter of the Boston Red Sox and UConn Women's Basketball. He enjoyed a good bottle of Spaten beer or an occasional shot of Jagermeister.
Gerry leaves behind to treasure his memory his daughter Kristen Hertel of Woodbury, CT, and his son Douglas Hertel and Tammy Lynn of Kingston, PA. He was Opa to grandsons Michael Gelineau and his wife Josi of Andover, KS; grandsons Ryan Hertel of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Dylan Hertel of State College, PA, and great-grandaughter Jaylee Gelineau. His stepchildren include Debbie Drexler Jonas and Fred, Judy SantaMaria and Marco, Thomas Angelicola and Tish, and 11 grand stepchildren and 1 great stepgranddaughter. Gerry was predeceased by his infant son, Kenton Bruce Hertel.
The family wishes to recognize and thank Masonicare Hospice Services for their help, and a special thank you to Gerry's aide, Lucretia, for taking such good care of him during the last few months of his life.
Gerry lived a full and wonderful life, with 97 years' worth of memories and happiness.
Funeral services for Mr. Hertel will be held privately at the convenience of his family.
