AT THE CASEY-O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME
WATERBURY. Mrs. Gloria L. Cotner, age 83, of North Main St Waterbury, died Wednesday July 2, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital after an extended illness. She was the wife of Billy O. Cotner.
Gloria was born November 28, 1924 in Waterbury, the daughter of the late Fred and Margaret (Morison) Lawlor. She graduated from Wilby High School in 1942 and then joined the United States Navy and proudly served her country as a Navy Wave during World War II. She attended Pratt Institute of Costume Design, Hunter College and Purdue University. Her love for music and theatre costume designing brought her several awards for designs in Civic Theatre productions such as My Fair Lady, The Lady's Not for Burning and Murder in the Cathedral. She also sang in many choirs and even sang with the Margaret Powers and Larry Jamison Orchestras. She was Chairperson of the Waterbury Oratorio Society as well as the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra. She was an avid reader and involved herself with activities such as starting the School Library at Bucks Hill School, Research and Catalogue Coordinator at Mattatuck Museum as well as being an avid reader of Historical Novels now donated to the Silas Bronson Library. She was the State Chairman for PTA's and was instrumental in the planning and building of Bucks Hill School.
She was most proud of her work as a member and secretary at the First Congregational Church where she served under the Revs. Ken Clinton, Carl Christensen and Herbert Mardis. She was a member of the Church Building Committee, Chairman of Music, Fair and Outreach Committees as well as for the Hanging of the Greens, Chairperson of the Schlegal Committee and a member of the Church Art Group. She loved being a journalist and keeping daily records of all life had to offer. She was also an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriot fan and a member of the Mattatuck Sports Car Club
Besides her loving husband of 62 years, Gloria leaves a son, Graham and his wife Karen Cotner of Waterbury, a daughter Cathy and her husband Ralph Crouse of Wolcott and three grandchildren, Stewart and David Crouse and Eric Cotner. She was predeceased by her grandson Christian Cotner just several weeks ago.
A Memorial service for Mrs. Cotner will be held on Thursday July 10, 2008 at 11:00am at the First Congregational Church, West Main St Waterbury, with the Rev. Kenneth Frasier presiding. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Waterbury will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mrs. Cotner's memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, Outreach or Music Programs.
