WATERBURY - Grace G. (Carrington) Schum age 96 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Glendale Health Care Center in Naugatuck surrounded by the love and comfort of her family after an extended illness. She was the widow of John J. Schum.
Grace was born December 3, 1920 in Waterbury CT, the youngest of 10 brothers and 7 sisters and the last surviving child of the late Lewis and Annie (Dwyer) Carrington and was a graduate of Wilby High School. After becoming a widow with three children at the age of 41, she began doing clerical work for several area businesses retiring at the age of 85 from the City of Waterbury, Assessors Office. She raised her family with courage, strength and faith in God. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the Sweet Adeline's and enjoyed taking trips to the casinos, watching UCONN Women's Basketball and shopping. Most importantly, she was dedicated to her family who, she adored and was devoted to. Grace will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love her.
The Schum family would like to thank and acknowledge the staff at Glendale Health Care Center and Seasons Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they provided to Grace and her family during her stay.
Among her survivors are her children; Martin Schum of Fort Myers Fl., and Janet Boucher and her husband, Andrew of Waterbury. She is also survived by her ten grandchildren and seven great children as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her 17 siblings and her son, John Schum and his wife Marie.
Funeral services for Mrs. Schum will be held on Monday, November 6, 2017 when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at11:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church 182 Robbins St Waterbury. Rites of Committal will follow in New St Joseph's Cemetery Waterbury. Relatives and friends may visit with Grace's family on Monday morning from 9:30am till 10:30am at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St Waterbury, CT 06705. In lieu of flowers, to honor Grace's memory, donations may be made to the St Jude's Children's Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105 or to the charity of donors choice.
