WATERBURY - It is with profound sadness that the family of Gregg "Bear" Casey, age 60, share the news of his peaceful passing on March 25, 2025, at Vitas Hospice In Patient Unit of St Marys Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut, surrounded by his loved ones. He fought the good fight until the end and left this world without pain, embraced by those who cherished him.
Born on September 2, 1964, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gregg and his family moved to Cheshire, Connecticut - the town he called home - in 1973. He attended Cheshire High School where he played on the soccer team and met his first love, Marcie, in 1980. Later in life, he survived the streets of New Haven by busking with his beloved guitar, Mirrie, who has accompanied him into the great beyond. A man of sharp wit and a stubborn Irish spirit, he carried a wry sense of humor that could lighten any room. His sarcasm was legendary, his laughter infectious, and his presence unforgettable. Gregg found joy in life’s simple pleasures—fishing at dawn, strumming his guitar, and cooking for his friends and family. He was also an herbal aficionado and was happy to share “bowls” alongside his dishes. Gregg loved and appreciated the family and companionship found within the community of both the SCA and Renaissance fairs. A dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for the past 13 years, Gregg was committed to the journey of recovery and provided support to many along the way. His resilience and strength were evident in every challenge he faced.
Gregg is survived by his loving wife, Marcie Casey; his stepdaughter, Mysti Keller and her partner Ed Nole; his sisters; Kirsten Powell (husband Colin) and Deirdre Kramer (husband Scott); and his cherished Aunt Karen "Bitsy" Kerr. Gregg was predeceased by his mother, Dori Casey (Hoffman) and his beloved cat, Ninja. While gone, Gregg’s spirit remains ever-present in the lives of those who knew him.
Now at peace in the Lagoon of the Summerland—"ALL 10 toes in the sand and a fishing pole in his hand"—Gregg’s memory will live on through the stories shared by those who loved him. May his humor, music, and unwavering spirit continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Celebration of Life for Gregg will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2025 from 1-4 PM at Osbournedale State Park in Derby, CT in the pavilion. Friends and family are invited to attend and share stories, laughter, and music in Gregg’s memory.
