Helen Larivee

June 13, 1925 — November 9, 2016

WATERTOWN - Mrs. Helen Irene (Vaichus, Tamulis) Larivee, Watertown, Connecticut, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at Danbury Hospital after a brief illness.

Growing up on a farm in Oakville, she spoke often about her chores on the farm including milking the cows, and her favorite horse, 'Dickey'. She shared fond memories of how her mother let her care for a pet lamb and how her brother nicknamed her 'Beansie'. Helen was a 1943 graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School. God had gifted her with a heart to help others, thus she pursued a career in psychiatric nursing through Massachusetts School of Nursing. As Senior LPN she worked at Taunton State Hospital - Brockton Area Facility for 25-plus years. Her wit and wisdom was an asset as she cared for her patients. In her retirement, she was an avid golfer, bird watcher, and she loved her cats, from 'Sasha' to 'Baron' to 'Suzie'. She also became a devoted baseball fan as she rooted for her Mets with her beloved nephew Edward Vaichus. In the later season of life, she looked forward to the family gatherings with her brother's thirteen children and their children.

Helen was twice widowed; and both her former husbands served honorably in the United States Armed Forces. Her first husband, George John Tamulis served in Army and passed away on July 30, 1965. Her second husband Alfred Ernest Larivee served with 101st Field Artillery, Massachusetts National Guard and passed away on April 20, 1976. Helen was pre-deceased by her parents, Peter Vaichus and Mary Unikas, both of whom were born in Lithuania; also her brother, Raymond P. Vaichus and sister, Michalena Vaichus.
She is survived by her step-daughter Donna (Larivee) Nunes of Salem, Alabama, her sister-in-law, Anne (Litwinas) Vaichus of Oakville, Connecticut and a long list of cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Larivee will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 184 Robbins St Waterbury when a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. The O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville has been entrusted to assist the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, to honor Helen's memory, gifts may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ( www.stjude.org ).
