THE CASEY FAMILY IS HONORED TO BE CARING FOR AND ASSISTING THE FAMILY OF INEZ HARTIGAN
WOLCOTT - Inez M. Hartigan, age 81 of Wolcott, passed away on Saturday, May 26th 2018. She was the beloved wife of Patrick J. Hartigan, Jr.
Inez was born July 10th 1936 in Waterbury, CT, the daughter of the late William L. and Nellie (McDonald) Mellick and her loving stepmother, Martha C. Mellick. Inez was a graduate of Wilby High School and attended The Teachers College of Connecticut receiving an A.S. degree in business. She later obtained a B.S. degree in elementary education, and a fifth year certificate in reading, from Central Connecticut State College. Inez began her teaching career at the Jewish Community Center in Waterbury with preschool children. She was an educator in Wolcott teaching seventh grade at Alcott school, second grade at Frisbie school and first grade at Wakelee Elementary for over 30 years. As an educator, she was a negotiator for the Wolcott Education Association, cooperating teacher for the BEST program, and involved in numerous curriculum committees. She was a teacher assessor, observing and evaluating beginning teachers across Connecticut. While teaching at Wakelee, Inez designed and implemented the Reach Out and Read (R.O.A.R.) initiative, a lunch time read aloud program using adult volunteers from the Wolcott Business community. During her career, Inez was selected as Wolcott Teacher of the Year, as well as the Connecticut Association of Schools Teacher of the Year.
Inez was a past President of the Wolcott Junior Women's Club and past Vice President of the Notre Dame Academy Parents Association. She was a founding and current member of the Wolcott Education Foundation, serving since 1996.
Inez had been a resident of Wolcott for 70 years and a lifelong communicant of St. Pius the X Church. She was a member of the Goodspeed Opera House for over twenty five years.
Besides her husband, Patrick, of nearly 59 years, Inez is survived by her daughter, Lisa M. H. Sexton of Wolcott and son, William P. Hartigan of FL. She also leaves behind two grandchildren; Caroline H. Sexton of Manhattan, N.Y and Patrick C. Sexton of Scottsdale, AZ.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hartigan will be held on Friday June 1st 2018 at 9:15 am from Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St. @ Southmayd Rd. Waterbury to Saint Pius the X Church 517 Woodtick Rd Wolcott where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Wolcott. Thursday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wolcott Education Foundation, the Inez M.
