OXFORD - James D. Cox, age 82 of Oxford and frequently known as "JD" or " Rooster," passed away peacefully on January 31, 2017. He was the loving and devoted husband of Joyce (Barker) Cox.
James was born February 22, 1934 in Broxton, Georgia, the eldest son of the late Austin and Opplie (Yarberry) Cox. He was raised on the family farm and educated in the south Georgia schools. He proudly served his country with the US Army during the Korean War Conflict. After his service to our country, Jim settled in Oxford, CT. He was employed by Kerite in Seymour, CT, where he was a machinist and maintenance foreman for 35 years until his retirement.
Jim has passed on his knowledge to all his family members and will be remembered for his ability to fabricate any and all parts for home repair or machinery in general. He often called himself "a jack of all trades and master of none," which was certainty not true, for there were very few things that Jim could not do if put to the test. Boy Scout Troop 1 Oxford was another outlet for Jim's wealth of knowledge. Through the years, Jim taught survival skills to the young men in the troops as well as to his four sons. His passion for hiking, camping and traveling was passed on to many of the troop members and members of the Valley Vagabonds. Jim took great pride in his accomplishment of visiting forty-eight of the fifty states. He completed the Long Trail from Williamston, MA to the Canadian border, and he made two High Adventure trips to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The story goes that the Boy Scout bus would never have made those trips successfully if not for the mechanical knowledge of Jim. He was a competitive bowler, avid gardener, and enjoyed raising melee worms to hand feed the bluebirds in his backyard.
Jim always took the time to lend a helping hand. Whatever the project, he could be counted on to be there with his knowledge, advice, and dedication to his fellow man.
Besides his wife Joyce of sixty years James is survived by his six children James (Donna), Beverly, Linda (John), Wayne (Debbie), Kevin (Joan) and Michael, his eleven grandchildren Alicia, Jonathon, Chelsea, Sean, Jessica, Austin, Matthew, Daniel, Lauren, Christopher, and Jason, his five great-grandchildren David, Veronica, James, Reagan, and Jack, his sisters Bonnie, Lurlyne and Montez, and his brother Larry.
All services for Mr. Cox will be held privately and at the convenience of the family. Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home 1987 East Main St Waterbury has been entrusted to assist the family with the arrangements.
