PROSPECT - James F. Phelan, age 77, passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury on March 6, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He is the husband of Mary Rita (Kenney) Phelan.
Jim was born in Waterbury CT on May 21, 1940, the son of the late Edward and Mary (Mansfield) Phelan. He received a Masters of Science Degree in Genetics at the University of Connecticut and a Bachelors Degree in Philosophy at St. Mary's Seminary. He worked at Uniroyal Chemical for most of his career. He was also Director of Religious Education at St. Anthony's Church of Prospect. Jim also served on the Board of Directors of St.Vincent DePaul Shelter in Waterbury.
Some of Mr. Phelan's many interests include; model railroads, building dollhouses, Irish literature and music, photography, and he was also an avid UCONN Women's Basketball fan and a technology enthusiast. Jim had strong pride in his family and heritage. Jim will be greatly missed by all those who were blessed to know and love him. The Phelan family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all of the medical professionals that have cared for him over the years, with special thanks to Dr. Edmund Quinn, Dr. Paul Sirop, Dr. John McHugh, and Dr. Craig Sklar.
Besides his wife, Mary Rita of 48 years, Jim leaves his daughter; Maureen Bridget (Milan) Grant of Thomaston, his sons' Dr. Neil Patrick (Elizabeth) Phelan of Woodbury MN and Timothy Francis (Kathryn) Phelan of East Longmeadow, MA. He also leaves his brother, Timothy (Judi) Phelan of NC, his brother-in-law, Michael (Kathryn) Kenney and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Phelan. He leaves 9 grandchildren: Milan IV, Michael James, Emma, Patrick, Lindsey, Mary Margaret, Liam, Aidan James and Emmet as well as several nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by his brother Edward Phelan.
Funeral services for Mr. Phelan will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony Church, 4 Union City Road, Prospect at 10:00 AM. Those planning to attend are kindly asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with Jim's family on Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home, 1987 East Main Street @ Southmayd Road, Waterbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, to honor Jim's memory. his family requests donations be made to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 20 Batterson Park Road, #302, Farmington, CT 06032.
