“Devoted to his family his faith and his friends”

HARWICH MA - John Martin “Marty” Begnal of Harwich MA, formerly of Waterbury, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family on Saturday, June 25, 2022. He was the husband of Arlene (Gravel) Burroughs Begnal and the widower of Julia Fonti Begnal, who passed on December 20, 1995.

J. Martin was born in Waterbury on April 28, 1935 the son of the late James and Lucille (Doucette) Begnal, He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954-1958, where he received his country’s Good Conduct Medal. He was employed for over 35 years with CT Light & Power, as an Electrician Supervisor and also supervised the Transformer Shop. He was a proud member of the CL&P “Old Geezers Crew”. He enjoyed being a fan of the Boston Red Sox, and the NY Giants and loved to fish, travel, and play cards but what was most important to Marty was his family, his faith, and his friends. He was a very active parishioner of St Francis Xavier Parish where he served as a lector, and Eucharistic Minister, was President of the Parish Council, and enjoyed participating in the parish minstrel every year. He was also President of the Waterbury Midget Football League as well as a member of the Harwich Senior Book Club. His tireless commitment to his faith, his parish, and his community was matched only by his devotion and dedication to his family. Marty was proud of his Irish heritage and he made the world a better place. His family wants all to know that they are truly blessed and thankful to have had him in their lives.

Left to honor his legacy and cherish his memory beside his wife Arlene are his children; Tracey Genua and her husband, Rick, Dana Carew and her husband, Danny, Martin Begnal and his wife, Melissa, Marita Thompson and her husband, John and Jenifer Begnal.
Marty was blessed with many grandchildren who were all very special to him; Michael Genua and his wife, Nicole, Matthew Genua and his wife, Cherie, Meghan Benjamin and her husband, Jonathan, Ryan Genua and his wife, Kelley, Katey Carew, Julia Carew, Chandler Begnal, Madeline Begnal, Brittany Thompson, Alyssa Johnson and her husband, Jay, Cory Thompson and his wife, Xhoela and Trevor Begnal, his great-grandchildren; Elijah, Ella, and Emmett Johnson, Gianna and Santino Genua, Giuliana Benjamin and his most recently born, great granddaughter, Mae Josephine Genua born Wednesday June 29. 2022. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, his aunt, Ann Begnal, his cousin, Larry Begnal, brother-in-law, Thomas Fonti and sisters in law; Sr. Theresa Fonti and Marianne Fonti.

Marty was often heard to say; “God blessed me with two beautiful wives and families”, and so he leaves his stepchildren; Bruce Burroughs, and his wife, Bibi and Ami Mickulin and her husband, Scott, grandchildren; Sydney and Adam Mickulin and his in laws: Paul and Chris Gravel, Dorothy Beaulieu, Doreen and Joe Folio.

Marty was predeceased by his in-laws; Richard Beaulieu and Al Gravel, Armond and Marie Fonti, William Fonti, Richard Fonti, Guilano Fonti and his nephew, David Fonti.

The Begnal family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation and acknowledge the VNA of Cape Cod Hospice and especially Sue and Dave, caregivers for the love, comfort, and support they shared with Marty and his family during his illness.


Funeral services for Mr. Begnal will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022, when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Francis Xavier Church 625 Baldwin St Waterbury at 10:00 a.m. Those planning to attend are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the Begnal family on Friday, July 8, 2022, from 4:00 till 7:00 p.m. at Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Care 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd Waterbury.
