WATERBURY CT - John J. Buckley, age 95, of Meriden Rd Waterbury, died peacefully Tuesday morning at his home, after a long illness. He was the widower of Mary "Mae" (Deegan) Buckley.
John was born in Waterbury on February 16, 1916, a son of the late Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Rice) Buckley. He was a graduate of Hopeville Grammar School and Crosby High School. John proudly served his country in the US Army from 1941 thru 1945 and saw action in both North Africa and Italy. John joined Scovill Manufacturing Co right after high school, worked in the wire mill and rose through the ranks to the position of shift foreman. Upon leaving Scovill in 1958 he enrolled in trade school in Chicago, obtaining certification as a heating and sir-conditioning service. John founded and operated Worry-Free Burner Service and subsequently was employed at Janazzo Heating and Air-Conditioning, for 20 years retiring in 1982. Mr. Buckley was elected to two terms as City Clerk of the City of Waterbury from 1986-1989. He was a parishioner of St Leo the Great Church in Waterbury.
Mr. Buckley is survived by his only child, Attorney Dennis M. Buckley of Waterbury CT and a sister, Sister Marie Buckley C.M.D. of Stamford CT. One of 9 children, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Agnes, Margaret "Peggy", Alice, Ann and Elizabeth as well as his brothers, Francis and Gerald.
Funeral services for Mr. Buckley will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 10:00 am from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home 1581 East Main St Waterbury to Saint Leo the Great Church,14 Bentwood Dr Waterbury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am. Burial will be held at the convenience of his family. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Thursday morning from 9 till 10:00am. Memorial donations in Mr. Buckley's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Waterbury Chapter, 1075 Chase Parkway Waterbury CT 06708.
