John J. Calo

AT THE O'NEILL FUNERAL HOME - OAKVILLE - WOODBURY - John J. Calo Sr. age 85, of Lake Rd. Woodbury, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at home surrounded by his family.. He was the husband of Nancy (Sullivan) Calo.

John was born December 8, 1924 in Waterbury, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Summa) Calo. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School and the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. He was a decorated veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country during World War II. He participated in the Normandy Campaign as a member of the 564th Signal and Air Warning Battalion. Upon returning stateside John was an Able Seaman in the US Army crashboats in the Chesapeake Bay. John was a longtime employee of the State of CT, Dept of Transportation where he was involved as a principal engineer for many major road projects in the state. Upon his retirement, he continued to use his engineering experience at DMJM Engineering. He was active within his community, including serving as the former Chairman of the Woodbury Democratic Town Committee. He was a member of VFW Post 201, in the Brooklyn section of Waterbury, where he served many offices including Past Post Commander. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Middlebury where he also served in many capacities including Past Grand Knight. He was a devout parishioner of St Theresa of Avila Church in Woodbury.

Besides his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, John leaves 11 children, John J. Calo Jr. of Bethlehem, Joseph and his wife Nancy of Bethlehem, James of Bethlehem, Jeffrey of Woodbury, Michael and his wife Angela of Southbury, Kathleen and her husband Jack Tarleton of Millbrook NY, Deborah Calo- Rigazio and her husband Randy of Oakville, Anne Calo of Bradford RI, MaryBeth Calo-Turner of Prospect, Jeanne and her husband Eric Witt of Pauillo HI, and Jennifer and her husband, Chris Holness of Middlebury. He also leaves three sisters, Margaret Schuster of Wolcott, Delores Romaniello and Marie Generali both of Waterbury as well as his 21 grandchildren;: Molly, Libby, Emily.Jed, Abbie, Sara, Layla, Jake, Nancy; Samantha, Max, Hannah, Rebecca, Andrew, Keely, Alexa, Savannah, Olivia, Gabrielle, Michae, Camillia and 2 great grandchildren Kallysta and Isaiah. John also leaves many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by a grandson, Joshua John Calo-Rigazio, his brother, Leonard Calo and a son-in-law, Norman Evans..

Funeral services with full military honors for Mr. Calo will be held on Monday, August 2, 2010 at 10:00am at St Theresa of Avila Church Woodbury for a Mass of Christian Burial. Those wishing to attend the funeral mass are requested to go directly to the church for 9:45am. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Family and friends may visit at the O'Neill Funeral Home 742 Main St Oakville on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 3:00 till 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John's name to St Theresa of Avila Church, Main St South Woodbury CT 06798.
