AT THE CASEY-O'DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, WATERBURY CT John J. Connelly, age 93 of Richmond Ave, Waterbury, died on Saturday, November 8, 2008, surrounded by his loving family at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Theresa (Ficteo) Connelly. .
A lifelong resident of Waterbury, John was born on March 27, 1915 in Waterbury. the son of the late Thomas and Cecilia (Long) Connelly. He graduated from St. Mary's Grammar School and Leavenworth High School and he worked for a time at Benrus Watch in Waterbury and then at Reymonds Bakery in Waterbury where he retired with more than 40 years of service. As an avid sports fan and renowned athlete in his own right, John shared his devotion to the game of baseball with the youth of Waterbury as a coach of Youth baseball for over 50 years. In 1958, he co-founded the Waterbury Li'l Fellers League, where countless Waterbury kids were fortunate to learn from his love of baseball but most importantly respected him for his patience and dedication. He remained active for more than half a century and was rewarded for his work with the following honors of distinction, in 1982 Li'l Fellers League Honors, in 1985, the Waterbury Timers Hall of Fame Award, in 1989, the "Joe Samoska" dedication to baseball award and in 1992 the prestigious "Anderson Boys Club, Humanitarian Service Award". The thousands of youngsters he mentored over the years will long remember his dedication and commitment to sportsmanship and the youth of Waterbury. He was a parishioner of SS Peter & Paul Church.
Besides his loving wife of 62 years, John leaves three children, States Attorney, John A. Connelly and his wife Janet, Michael Connelly and Cecilia Laraway and her husband Wayne, all of Waterbury. He also leaves a brother, James Connelly of Waterbury and 5 grandchildren, Christine Dorman, Carrie Woodward, Amy Banach, Ann Yukish and John Connelly and 5 great grandchildren. His brothers Thomas and Francis Connelly are deceased.
Funeral Services for Mr. Connelly will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2008, with a Mass of Christian Burial at SS Peter & Paul Church 67 Southmayd Rd Waterbury CT at 10:30am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours. The Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home has been entrusted to assist the family with arrangements.
