"A lifetime devoted to his family and his students"
WOLCOTT - John Donet O'Connor age 84 passed away on July 14, 2021 at home after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of the late Corrine (Moore) O'Connor with whom he enjoyed 55 years of love and friendship.
Mr. O'Connor was born in New York on March 24th, 1936, the son of the late Gladys (Burns) O'Connor and James O'Connor and brother to Betty Jane (St.Legder). The family quickly moved to Waterbury and grew up in downtown Waterbury eventually graduating from Sacred Heart High School. He attended Concord University, where he played a lot of basketball and attended some classes. He then took his show on the road to Quinnipiac University and received a degree in Education. He began his teaching career in Region 16 education as a science teacher. He continued his education at Central CT State College receiving his 6th year in administration. After several years of teaching, he became principal of Community and Algonquin schools. He loved his time in education and looked forward to shaping the young minds of his students and sometimes teachers.
John met the love of his life, Corrine Moore and the two married on October 5th 1963. They went on to have 4 active boys. John of Wolcott, Brendan of Milford, the late great Timothy and Emmett and his wife Cheryl of Prospect, along with his cherished grandchildren, Tim and Kyla of Prospect. After they married the young couple moved from Waterbury to Middlebury but our dad always kept abreast of what was going on in Waterbury. He stayed involved in Sacred Heart High School, well after all four of his kids attended there. He was an active member of the BPOE Club # 265, running the scholarship for countless years. He was a parishioner of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception where he could be found passing the basket at the 4:15 mass every Saturday.
John enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends, going on trips to China, Russia, Alaska, the Mississippi River, and with countless trips to Ireland. He was an avid card player, specializing in Cribbage, often letting you know if you miscounted. He looked forward to his weekly meeting with his R.O.M.E.O. (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club. Above all, he enjoyed watching his two grandchildren grow up. He attended many of their sporting events and school functions and even at the end no visit could be completed without an update on Tim and Kyla.
