WATERBURY - John F. Goggin, age 84, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at St. Mary's Hospital after an extended illness. He was the husband of Patricia (McMahon) Goggin.
John was born December 1, 1929 in Waterbury, the first born of the late Michael and Margaret (Hussey) Goggin both from County Kerry, Ireland. John was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Grammar School, Crosby High School and he attended Post College and graduated from University of Bridgeport. He was a lieutenant in the US Army and graduated from the U. S. Army Adjutant General School and served in that capacity during the Korean War under General Maxwell Taylor. Following the war, he returned to Waterbury and was the owner and founder of the John F. Goggin Insurance and Real Estate Company in Waterbury. The Company received national awards and recognitions for its years of service to the greater Waterbury area. In 1956 he was responsible for instituting the first "major medical insurance policy" for City of Waterbury employees. This policy was the first such program provided to a municipality in the United States.
John was the Past President of the Waterbury Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Award. He was also a member of the Waterbury Elks Lodge # 265, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Monsignor Slocum Division # 1, the VFW Post 201 and the Officers Club of Connecticut. John was also actively involved in local politics and was a colleague, mentor and advisor to many political figures during the past decades. John was also a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. He was an avid traveler particularly enjoying cruises. He was a parishioner of both the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception as well as Our Lady of Loreto in Waterbury.
Besides his wife Pat, he leaves his son, Brian F. Goggin of Waterbury and grandchildren, Erin and Jack Goggin. He also leaves his sister, Anne Goggin Carey of Waterbury, brother, Edmond Goggin and his wife Mary of Southington, sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" K. Goggin of Prospect, brother-in-law Kevin McMahon and his wife Carole of Sandwich MA, sister-in-law Sheila McMahon Walsh and her husband John of Naples NY and many cousins, nieces and nephews from the Goggin, Hussey, Crowley and Dolan families. John was predeceased by his brothers, Dennis J. Goggin and Michael "Bibber" Goggin, nephews, Michael K. Goggin and David C. Goggin grandnephew, Michael Karalius and Cousins John Dolan and Donald Crowley.
Funeral services for Mr. Goggin will be held on Thursday, February 20 ,2014 at 9:00a.m. from Eastside Memorial, "A Casey Family Funeral Home and Tribute Center to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception 74 West Main St Waterbury to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with John's family on Wednesday February 19, 2014 from 5:00 till 8:00 at the funeral home.
