AT THE CASEY - O"DONNELL FAMILY FUNERAL HOME - John P. Hayes, age 90, of Tulip Tree Lane Prospect, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, March 20, 2010, while at the Paradigm Health Center in Prospect, with this family at his side. He was the husband of Dorothy (Bagley) Hayes.
John was born on August 23, 1919 in Waterbury, the son of the late James J. and Catherine (Sullivan) Hayes. He was a graduate of Leavenworth High School and proudly served his country with the U.S. Army, 113th Infantry Regiment, during World War II. John began his career at the Southern New England Telephone SNET . After a few years he was promoted to Assistant Foreman and then to foreman. He was a loyal, dedicated employee and enjoyed his years at SNET. John retired in 1982 after 38 years of service and spent his summers on Cape Cod where he and Dorothy had purchased a cottage shortly after being married. They would spend winters in Vero Beach FL until he was no longer able to handle the trip. When John was in Waterbury, he kept busy dealing in real estate, watching the Red Sox and Yankees and UConn basketball. His other pleasures were listening to music, taking rides in the car and spending time with his family. He was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church in Waterbury for many years.
Besides his loving wife of 55 years, Mr. Hayes leaves his daughter, Susan Barry of Prospect, his son, James P. Hayes and his wife, Nancy of Waterbury and his two grandchildren, Kyle and Christine Barry of Prospect. He also leaves a niece and nephew in Warwick NY, Jane Diermeier and Edward Hayes. John was predeceased by two brothers, James M and Edward J. Hayes.
Funeral services for Mr. Hayes will be held on Monday March 22, 2010 at 10:00am from the Casey-O'Donnell Family Funeral Home, 1581 East Main St Waterbury to Saint Anthony Church, Prospect for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown. Family and friends may visit the funeral home on Monday morning from 9:00 till 10:00am.
