WATERBURY: John D. Hickey age 85, formerly of Timber Lane, died peacefully at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain after an extended illness. He was the widower of Ruth (Doherty) Hickey.
Mr. Hickey was born May 8th, 1927 in Waterbury, the son of the late William and Anne (Judge) Hickey. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School and proudly served his country with the US Army during WWII. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he enrolled at Providence College where he graduated with his Bachelors degree. He received his Masters degree from the Fairfield University and worked as an Administrator with the Waterbury School System for over thirty years before his retirement. During his teaching career he served as Principal at several Waterbury schools including Kingsbury Elementary, Wendell Cross Elementary, Wallace Middle School and Reagan Elementary. After his retirement, John took a part time position at Saint Mary's Hospital where he worked in the Support Services Department. He was an avid NY Yankee fan and was happiest when he was spending time surrounded by his family especially his children and grandchildren. He was a communicant of Saint Leo the Great Church.
Among his survivors are his children, John D. Hickey Jr. and his wife Dana of Cheshire, Joseph Hickey and his wife Victoria of Cheshire, Christopher G. Hickey and his wife Kristen of Wolcott, Marion Hickey of Waterbury and Anne Lippincott and her husband Thomas of Southington, his sister, Laurine Ghent of Waterbury, and his nine grandchildren, Kaleigh, Sarah, Brian, Matthew, Emily, Allyson, Michael, Samantha, & Jack. He is predeceased by his son, William Hickey and his two brothers, William and Robert.
Funeral services for Mr. Hickey will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012 at 10:00a.m. from the Casey O'Donnell Family Funeral Home 1581 East Main St Waterbury to Saints Peter and Paul Church, Southmayd Rd Waterbury to Celebrate the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Rites of Committal and Interment along with Full Military Honors will follow in New Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Waterbury. Visiting hours for Mr. Hickey will be on Sunday evening from 5 till 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
