Waterbury John M. O'Donnell, age 76 of Waterbury, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 surrounded by his loving family at the Vitas Innovative Care Unit of St. Mary's Hospital. He was the husband of Mary Jane (Steadman) O'Donnell.
John was born on November 11, 1937 in Waterbury the son of the late Michael and Rose (Fitzpatrick) O'Donnell. He was a graduate of SS Peter & Paul Grammar School and Sacred Heart High School and Attended La Salette Seminary. John was employed as an insurance adjuster for various insurance companies in the greater Waterbury area. He was an avid golfer, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sheriden Council where he attained Fourth Degree status and was a member of St. Leo the Great Church. John was a loyal and diehard Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed many trips to Boston. He was also a fan of the UConn Huskies Women's Basketball Team. He had a true zest for life, enjoyed many camping trips with his family and was an avid history buff especially of the Civil War era. He was happiest when surrounded by his family and will be remembered as an especially good husband, father and grandfather.
Besides his loving wife of 52 years, John is survived by his son Kevin of Waterbury and daughters; Sandra Rizk and her husband, James of Watertown, Karen Ahmed and her husband, Andrew of Waterbury, Patricia Leavey and her husband, Patrick of Bethpage NY and his daughter, Kathleen O'Donnell of Boca Raton FL. He also leaves his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth DaSilva O'Donnell of Morris and his sister, Mary Taylor of Wolcott and 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his son, Thomas O'Donnell, brother, Joseph O'Donnell and sister, Kathleen O'Donnell.
Funeral services for Mr. O'Donnell will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 10:30am at Saint Leo the Great Church 14 Bentwood Ave Waterbury were a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Those who plan on attending are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Waterbury. Relatives and friends may visit with John's family on Thursday evening at Eastside Memorial, a Casey Family Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 1987 East Main St @ Southmayd Rd. Waterbury from 4:00 to 7:00pm. Memorial donation's in John's memory can be made Saint Leo the Great Or Saints peter & Paul Church.
