WATERBURY - John W. "Red" Lawson Jr. age 97 of Waterbury passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love and comfort of his family on May 17, 2016 after a brief illness. He is the husband of Joan (Sullivan) Lawson
Red was born December 3, 1918 in Rock Springs WY the son of the late John Sr. and Jeane (Samuels) Lawson. Red left home at an early age and started work in the Conservation Corp Camps building roads and bridges throughout the West. Once he was old enough he enlisted in the 115th Horse Calvary Division. When World War II erupted Red joined the Armored Tank Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge with General George Patton' liberated the Dachau prison in April of 1945, fought in the Korean War and was stationed throughout many countries during his exemplary and distinguished 22 year career in the Army. After his retirement in the US Army, he worked for many years as a meat cutter for Johnny's Meat market, PikWik and Pathmark. After his retirement as a meat cutter he began a career with the City of Waterbury, Parking Authority as an Attendant in many downtown garages Red finally retired for the last time at age 88, due to health reasons. Red was an inspiration to all and as an amputee himself he would visit other amputees at local hospitals to share with them that if he could do it at 90, so could they. Red had an undying love for his family especially his granddaughters Juliana and Alexa and great grandson Juel and they were the reason that he kept going in his final months. Red was a Member of the BPO Elks, Salem #336, Chapter and was a longtime parishioner of St Francis Xavier Church.
Besides his wife of 53 years, Red leaves his 3 children, Sharyl Taylor of AZ, Randi Hutchens and her husband Toney of WA, Elizabeth Santiago and her husband, Hector of Waterbury, his 9 grandchildren including Juliana (Don) Savoy and Alexa with whom he made his home, 21 great grandchildren including Juel Savoy and 8 great, great grandchildren and daughter-in-law Connie Lawson of WA. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Lawson and son-in-law Al Taylor. He will be missed by his grandogs Molly and Rocky because of the endless supply of dog treats that Red had for them.
Funeral services with full Military honors for Mr. Lawson will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Francis Xavier Church, 625 Baldwin St Waterbury at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Casey's Eastside Memorial Funeral Home has been entrusted to assist the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers to honor Red's memory, donations to St. Francis Xavier Church 625 Baldwin St Waterbury CT 06706 would be appreciated.
