OAKVILLE- John O. Vitone, age 83, of Oakville, died peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital in the early hours of April 21, 2014 after a long illness. Nobody fought as hard as he did to enjoy every day and savor the best of it. He was the widower of Mary (Bercik) Vitone.
John was born July 31, 1930 a son of the late Filibert and Maria (DeMola) Vitone and was a life-long resident of Oakville. John was an entrepreneur for most of his life. He owned Edelmuth Chemical Company and Abair Manufacturing of Waterbury. He believed in working and never retiring. As an extremely active and passionate individual, he was Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee of Watertown for many years, Commissioner of the Watertown Water and Sewer Department and was also Deputy Sheriff of Litchfield County. John proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Sergeant during the Korean War. His longest and most dedicated tenure was working tirelessly as the Building Chairman at the Cercemaggiore Club and getting it established. John was extremely proud of the accomplishments of the club and served as president for three terms. One of his biggest pleasures came from working the clambakes and for various other clubs in the area. He was a member of the VFW Post 7330 of Watertown, the American Legion Post 195 of Watertown, the Elks Club and the Unico Club of Waterbury. John had a love for rebuilding antique cars and driving them in the holiday parades. He was an avid New York Yankee fan and enjoyed reading and traveling, especially to foreign countries.
John will be sadly missed by his son Robert Vitone and his wife Virginia, his daughter Patricia Morken and her husband John, his two grandsons, Ryan and Christopher Vitone who will cherish their fond memories of their Poppa. He also leaves behind a loving sister Norma Kaminski and her husband Francis of Watertown, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed by his dear and loyal friends Louis Finnegan and Vinnie Basile. John was predeceased by his brother Joseph Vitone.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 9 a.m. at Saint Mary Magdalen Church. Friends and family are asked to meet directly at church. Rites of Committal will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
